Henan Yaxin Steel Group, one of China's new-generation premium steel manufacturers, integrates sintering, ironmaking, steelmaking, and other production processes. During steel production, large volumes of blast furnace gas (BFG) and basic oxygen furnace gas (BOFG) are generated as by-products. Due to their low calorific value and fluctuating composition, these gases are often underutilized. Direct flaring not only wastes valuable energy resources but also increases carbon emissions.

As the steel industry faces growing pressure to improve energy efficiency while reducing carbon emissions, maximizing the value of industrial waste gas has become a key priority in its green transition.

Energy cascade utilization transforms waste gas into a valuable energy resource.

To meet Yaxin Steel's needs, Liyu developed a customized waste gas energy cascade utilization solution. The project is equipped with 20 independently developed Liyu LY2000 industrial gas engine generator sets, with a total installed capacity of 24 MW, creating a circular energy utilization system.

Through a three-stage energy cascade process, the project maximizes the value of steel waste gas. After purification, the waste gas is supplied to Liyu generator sets for power generation. The recovered engine waste heat is then utilized by boilers to produce steam, which is subsequently fed into steam turbines for secondary electricity generation.

Before the project was implemented, Yaxin Steel's steam production capacity was approximately 20 tons per hour, and fluctuations in steam output affected the stable operation of its steam turbine generators. With Liyu's energy cascade utilization solution, an additional 15 tons of steam per hour has been added, enabling stable turbine operation. The project upgrades the system from standalone power generation to the combined production of electricity, heat, and steam, achieving an overall energy utilization efficiency of over 88%.

Three Key Advantages of a Reliable Energy Solution

High efficiency, low emissions, and significant economic benefits. Liyu's generator sets can generate 1 kWh of electricity from approximately 3–3.3 Nm³ of blast furnace gas, producing up to 190 million kWh of electricity annually and delivering annual electricity cost savings of more than RMB 60 million. A downstream denitrification and dust removal system further reduces emissions, improving both environmental performance and energy efficiency.

Flexible operation to accommodate production fluctuations. The solution requires no additional factory buildings, features a compact footprint, short construction time, and low investment cost. Generator units can be started or stopped flexibly according to fluctuations in upstream gas production, ensuring that every cubic meter of steel waste gas is utilized efficiently.

Reliable technology backed by one-stop lifecycle services. Liyu provides comprehensive support covering project design, equipment supply, installation, commissioning, acceptance, and full lifecycle operation and maintenance. Steel waste gas contains complex components and high levels of impurities, placing stringent demands on fuel adaptability and gas pretreatment technologies. By combining advanced combustion control technologies with optimized gas purification processes, Liyu ensures stable and efficient power generation. The technology has been successfully included in the Fifth Batch of the Recommended Catalogue of Energy-Saving and Carbon-Reduction Equipment issued by China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, demonstrating its industry-leading technical capabilities.

The Liyu–Yaxin project not only demonstrates the feasibility of industrial waste gas energy cascade utilization, but also establishes a scalable and replicable model for sustainable industrial development. The solution can be widely applied in data centers, oil and gas fields, industrial and commercial distributed energy systems, and other energy-intensive industries.

More than a successful project, it marks another milestone in the steel industry's transition toward greener and smarter manufacturing, while opening a new chapter in transforming industrial waste gas into a cleaner, lower-carbon energy future.
